About Our Honorees

Lambert Orton, MD, FACEP
Dr. Orton was selected as this year’s Health Care Professional. Lambert was instrumental in getting occupational health for the coal mine off the ground in the early to mid 1970’s, which helped launch his medical practice here in Steamboat (now called Yampa Valley Medical Associates). In his hometown Mason City, Iowa, Lambert led an effort to implement an advanced 911 system. After working for years as an emergency physician Lambert was awarded the distinction as a Fellow of American College of Emergency Physicians.

Lambert Orton has many interests and skills. We can thank him for the steeple on Priest Creek Chapel, which has become an icon at the entrance of Steamboat Springs. In addition to his license to practice medicine, he also earned and maintains his real estate license. He was a multi-engine pilot. Lambert also loves agriculture, as evidenced by his impressive ranch here in Steamboat. Those who know Lambert have felt the warmth and kindness he exudes. He treats patients like friends. His commitment to his patients and the health of this community makes him a present day Doc Willett.

Jan Fritz, RN, OCN
The Healthcare Foundation is pleased to present Jan with the Health Care Community Advocate award. Although Jan is a medical professional, her impact on health care has touched the entire community of the Yampa Valley. Because of her industrious and entrepreneurial spirit, we have a hospice center at the Visiting Nurse Association and Chemotherapy Infusion treatments at Yampa Valley Medical Center. Driven by the question, “How can we make it better for the patient”, Jan gives tirelessly to our community. Anyone who encounters Jan has felt her passion and desire to make her patients’ lives richer.

Jan is a registered Nurse with a Masters in Nursing, also certified in adult oncology services by Oncology Nurses Society; she received the Florence Nightingale award from University of Colorado in 1996 for starting the Hospice program in Steamboat and organizing outpatient oncology program for YVMC; she completed end of life nursing education consortium (ELNEC) training in Denver in 2001; she completed the Train the Trainer program for ONS in 2009 which allows YVMC to offer nursing classes for chemo/biotherapy card; she attended the first annual Oncology Nurse Navigator meeting in September 2010 at Baltimore, Maryland.

About Doc Willett

As Yampa Valley’s country doctor, Doc Willett made “Ranch Calls” up and down Routt County. By buggy or sleigh, horseback and later by automobile, no patient was too far, no snow was too deep for Dr. Frederick E. Willett. During his 56 years of service, Doc Willett established a remarkable legacy of caring for our community that Yampa Valley Medical Center is proud to continue today.

DW Awards Purpose

The Healthcare Foundation for the Yampa Valley established the “Doc Willett Health Care Heritage Awards” in 2009 to commemorate Dr. Frederick Willett, who played an integral part in founding the first hospital in Steamboat Springs. Dr. Willett contributed enormously to our community by creating a legacy of caring, personal and quality healthcare.

The Doc Willett Awards Night gives us a chance to share the amazing stories of YVMC’s healthcare achievements, both present and past. Our goal was to create a fun night for locals and new friends to celebrate our history and congratulate two outstanding Steamboat civic leaders.

The mission of the Healthcare Foundation for the Yampa Valley is to support the healthcare services of Yampa Valley Medical Center for the communities it serves.
